Open till 4am and located on Pine street, which many San Franciscans take home after work, The Grubstake is convenient for those who want a tasty bite to eat before going home.
Grubstake combines diner fare with the occasional Pasta dishes. Don't forget the last page of the menu, aptly titled "The Portuguese Corner" which features the delicious (and healthy) Caldo Verde soup made from kale.
I think I've tried everything on the menu at one time or another. It's a favorite late-night hangout for lots of people, ranging from loud obnoxious Marina Chicks recently emerged from the Polk Street bars, yuppie guys surrounding the Marina Chicks named Chet, Chad, Bret, Brad, or Steve, jazz musicians and bartenders getting off work, and local pimps and their girls.

Safety equipment:
Bring earplugs with you just in case the place is overrun with loud Marina chicks. "Like, Oh-myGOD!!!" :)

Re: The Grubstake (Pine at Polk, SF)
Sat, August 27, 2005 - 5:10 PMYeah, the place was bought by some Portugese guys in the last few years and the quality of the food went wayyy up, although the quality of the clientele went wayyy down... it was better when it was weirdos and Polk street freaks hanging out... good recommendation.

Re: The Grubstake (Pine at Polk, SF)
Sun, August 28, 2005 - 11:13 AMTheir Caldo Verde soup is really good, especially on a cold, foggy night.
I actually haven't tried their burgers yet, which appear to be what most people get. -

Re: The Grubstake (Pine at Polk, SF)
Mon, August 29, 2005 - 4:49 AMOne waiter recommended the Caldo Verde soup to me in June, and I've been ordering it ever since.
And yes, it's perfectly hot and tasty on those cold nights in the city.
I crumble saltine crackers into my Caldo Verde soup and order a side of garlic bread to go with it.
How do you enjoy your Caldo Verde?

Re: The Grubstake (Pine at Polk, SF)
Mon, August 14, 2006 - 3:17 PMJust an update:
As of 2006/08/09, The Grubstake is still going strong and unlike many SF restaurants that stay up late on the weekends, Le Grubstake maintains a high level of quality throughout the day, extending well into the wee hours of the morning.
Caldo verde soup: green, hot and delicious, just the way we like it.
Great prices too. Not overpriced like the numerous late night clip joints in North Beach (e.g. Cable Car Pizza) and Union Square (e.g. Cafe Mason).
Oh, and still bring the earplugs. That much hasn't changed. =) -

Update: Grubstake is going strong from late afternoon till the wee hours.
My recommendation: go as early as you can. It's not as crowded and actually quite peaceful from 5pm until 11pm. Their Caldo Verde soup always turns out best during the regular dinner hours.
If you like beer, try their wonderful selection of Portuguese beers.
Also, their Steak with the fried egg on top is AWESOME!!! It's marinated in tasty spices and is topped by a gravy that, mixed with the egg, is murderistic.
Grubstake Portuguese Menu is the true Yummy Yummy. Bon appetit! -

Re: The Grubstake (Pine at Polk, SF)
Fri, January 26, 2007 - 5:04 PMmmm...caldo verde.... i've been to the grubstake twice now for this and i love it. going to try cooking it at home this weekend - having a craving.
i never know, though, what to get on the side with the caldo verde. i usually want something a little starch-y, and i don't eat wheat. have gotten fries and homefries, but not impressed with either one.
