2006-09-19 Update:

Al Pastor is still good, in burrito or taco form.

The only thing that seems to degenerate in the late night hours is the salsa verde.

It's usually nice and thick and avocado-y during lunch and dinner (12pm - 9pm). Quite often, during the late night rush (1am-3am), the usually thick salsa turns thin and watery.

Anyone else notice this?

San Jose is a great taqueria, open late on weekends, and the line is never too long, it's very underrated!

Personally, I think the food is better than at Farolito's too!!

El Farolitos (and particularly the one on 24/Mission) have been my sorta default taquaria for the past fifteen years. They've never been my fav but they are a solid straight up joint. I did get a bit bummed when they started charging fifty cents for chips though -- gyp.

Oh, and I have more that one friend that covets that painting behing the counter of the meat on the spit.

Man, they load the guacamole/avocado on ElFaro. If you're a big fan you're in luck.

You are right about the Al Pastor (although I think the Carne Asada at La Taqueria is better, but they're not open late so that's neither here nor there).

Occassionally the busiest Taqueria in town, El Farolito sports a nice selection of tasty Mexican flavors all in one little spot.

Everyone from local merchants, construction workers, and late-night urban hipsters pack this place every day from morning 'til late night sampling the consistently delicious fare.

Open Sunday through Thursday till 2:45 AM. Fridays and Saturdays till 3:45 AM.

Highly recommended: Al pastor (burritos, tacos, tortas, nachos, quesadillas, etc.), Carnitas and Carne Asada are also a cut above the other Mission District taquerias.

El Farolito is one of maybe 3 spots in the city where I eat my favorite barbacued pork. I've been to Mexico City and Tijuana and numerous towns in Mexico where I've had terrific pork dishes. El Farolito stands up to some of my favorite places south of the border.

Did I mention that they also have kick-ass Agua Frescas? Batches of Horchata, Strawberry, and Cantalope (Melon) agua frescas are prepared fresh daily.

But don't take my word for it. Head on over to the Mission and tell me what you think! :)
